Accidental Tourist - 2014 Scott Kelby Worldwide Photowalk - Tiong Bahru walk

This is the 2nd photowalk that I managed to do over the past few months to continue shooting in my little island - the previous walk is captured in my earlier blog entry and now the "Scott Kelby Worldwide photowalk" held on October 11, 2014.

This photowalk has a constant on my photo calendar having gone for my first worldwalk back in 2011:

For Scott Kelby's walk, (Wilson Wong as walk leader) it was a nice little stroll around familiar Tiong Bahru neighborhood where I did several walks earlier i.e.

Interestingly, there is a link back to my earlier walk that I did which I only realised now...there is a "Kim Cheng Street" (formerly known as "Kim Ching Street" in this Tiong Bahru neighbourhood which is named after Tan Kim Ching, who was a prominent member of the Hokkien clan back in 1800s. More info available here: http://tiongbahruestate.blogspot.sg/2007/08/tan-kim-ching-1829-1892.html. Coincidentally, he was the 1st leader appointed for the Hokkien Thian Hock Keng Temple that I visited for the earlier walk (http://accidentalsingaporetourist.blogspot.sg/2014/10/accidental-tourist-500px-photo-walk.html).

Here are some captures of the neighborhood (and its resident cat):

Till the next time, onto the world and beyond!

Accidental Tourist - OH! Open House at Tiong Bahru, Singapore

A collage of the pictures taken of the art on display at the 6  houses & 1 temple

The only arts walk in Singapore ended last weekend. This is the 3rd year for the art walk and I was one of the lucky 1900 participants (together with another 2 besties) that joined the art walk over 2 weekends.

The walk started with a visit of the temple (the first dedicated to the Monkey God in Singapore) called "Qi Tian Gong temple". To those not familiar with Chinese deities, the monkey god  'Sun Wu Kong' is featured in the novel "Journey to the West". The deity is one of the most famous ones in Chinese theology. Visits to 6 homes within the vicinity revealed more artwork together with photographs of long exposures (6 hours to be precise) of  the house owners in their attire at birth. It was either a mish-mash of vague human forms or in one or 2 instances, a more distinct human form.

Accidental Tourist - Escape to a Nostalgic side of Singapore.....Tiong Bahru

Went galavanting down an old town in the heart of Singapore: "Tiong Bahru". In fact, it is one of the oldest housing estates in Singapore -info from Wikipedia

Interesting features of the flats there are its rounded balconies, flat rooftops, spiral staircases and light wells. An example is shown below:
What is also interesting to Singaporeans like myself in this location is the glorious FOOD! It's conveniently located in Tiong Bahru Market, a hub of activity from the food stalls and wet market which is accompanied with music from the sound man. Some snaps of the happenings on the way to the foodie paradise:

Would like to add something I read in the blog (remember.singapore) that indicated that "it is the only estate in Singapore to have all its streets named after local Chinese pioneers." I think this is extremely interesting Singapore trivia :) Till the next time, off to the world & beyond!
