Accidental Tourist - Singapore Walks conducted by the Original Singapore Walks

I discovered that an interesting way to spend the mornings in Singapore is to go for some of the morning walks organised by the Original Singapore Walks http://www.journeys.com.sg/ Their walks start around 9.30am and ends around 12pm.

I got myself a 3-day pass at a discount of $78 (usual $90 or $30 for each walk) and went for 3 morning walks with them from Monday to Wednesday. It is definitely a different experience to walk around the city I call home and being able to act like a real tourist :)

The walks are enjoyable as they are often history/ facts peppered with many personal stories that the guides shared while growing up in Singapore. As much effort and time was done to research the facts and plan the itineraries, I am obliged to not share most of their stories and routes taken but safe to say, I am extremely pleased with the coverage (both in terms of locations selected and stories shared during the walks).

I would like to share at least 1  (un)known facts I found particularly interesting for each of the walks. For the walks covering Chinatown and Little Indian, it was revealed that the Indian community were first allocated the areas around Chinatown to settle as part of the town plan formulated in 1800s during Raffles time. They subsequently found it to be unsuitable for their main trade of cattle farming so they shifted to the current Little India site which was flanked by the Rochor canal and the Kallang River area. That is why the oldest Indian temple is located in Chinatown. The Chinese on the other hand first settled in Rochor area but relocated to Chinatown as they found that the soil was unsuitable for padi farming. For the walk covering colonial Singapore, an interesting fact indicated was that the Raffles Hotel is actually the sole remaining structure of what was once a cluster of bungalows set aside for European section of the Raffles town plan.

As usual, some pictures of the places visited during the walks.

Accidental Tourist - Little India Shoot in April 2011

Went for a walk starting at Little India in central part of Singapore in early April 2011. Little India always fascinates me as it's a totally "new" place when taking photos i.e. you don't get to see some of the things in Little India anywhere else in Singapore e.g. handicraft, posters, food, architecture etc.

Here's a photo of the "famous" flower garland maker.....almost always the men are the ones making the extremely long garlands filled with perfumed flowers.

They can be found in almost every street corner in this place! As they are so used to having tourists snapping away, they have learnt the art of looking away or disinterested in the whole photography process....which is a shame for us photo buffs as I stood there almost like an eternity hoping to get a shot of him looking up instead of down but then again, I don't string flowers for a living and if I do, I will also probably concentrate on what gives me the dole.....

Now, this comment just gave me an idea that perhaps the tourism body here should have a skill display of some sort for these people who can then reach out to those interested in learning more about stringing their own garland. Will probably make the tourist experience more enriching!

Over here, you can also find bangles of every single color in the rainbow & more!

The other extremely unique handicraft that you can only find in this location is "henna" which is actually a temporary tattoo applied using plant dyes on your hand, arms and/or feet. It's a lovely art form as it takes a steady hand and a creative mind to come up with all the wonderful intricate designs that the ladies will simply love!!! Natural henna (dark brown) is preferred as it simply wears off after a few days... of course with everyone "wow"ing at your body art!

Personally, Little India is the first place I learnt to use my Nikon D90 DSLR after getting it last May.....this place has a special place in my heart when it comes to introducing me to the wonderful world of photography *Aw*

The photo buff group I went with this time were extremely adventurous as not only we went around Little India, we even ventured down past the Thieves Market near Arab Street area before heading down the Malay enclave at Arab Street before ending our photo-walk at Bugis area! More of those other fabulous places in later posting when I take my breath before the next posts! Needless to say, it was definitely an extremely productive shoot on that day.

Till the next time, off to the world & beyond!

Accidental tourist - Little India

1st expedition was to go to Singapore's very own Little India. Guess it is one of the “weird things” that we have in Singapore, enclaves of our many and diverse ethnic groups. Little India is where all people of Indian descent gather together especially during festive Deepavali celebrations. Similarly, the Malay communities descend on Arab Street and Geylang areas during the fasting month of Ramadan (well, that’s another blog entry for another day…). People of Chinese descent go down Chinatown during Chinese New Year time….

Anyway, coming back to my Little India assignment…even though I am a local Chinese Singaporean, I love going there...largely because I can’t find great Indian cuisine anywhere else! My mission this time however was to find photos that represents this place….in my mind, temples, temples and more temples….BTW the photos are taken using my autofocus camera (Olympus UTough) not my DSLR.

Onto the unknown & beyond!
